A recent survey among managers and professionals produced by Unisphere Research, a division of Information Today Inc, showed:

• 26% of respondents who experience problems with a transaction would switch to a competitor, while another 57% would simply abandon a transaction entirely;
• A total of 15% of respondents would simply no longer do online business with the site’s vendor.
• The most common issue, reported by 8 out of 10 respondents, was slow response times.
• How do respondents find out about these problems? Mainly by hearing about it from affected customers or end-users; few have mechanisms for discovering problems as they happen.

Aberdeen Group performance research:
A delay of one second in response time caused:

• 7% drop in sales conversion
• 11% drop in page views
• 16% drop in customer satisfaction

Performance testing firm Gomez, Inc:
Poor online performance has an offline impact as well. 65%  of online shoppers noted that they’d reconsider shopping at a company’s physical store if they had a poor online experience, accentuating the importance of site availability and performance.
